This has been such a productive spot for me with several dancers. The color and the light are really nice here. Plus this alley is kind of out of the way so nobody really passing by which makes it nice.
Nikon D3 and the 70-200 with all natural light.
Professional ballerina with one of the ballet companies in Boise.
A beautiful dancer she settled right into the shoot. The light in this old building was amazing. There was a mix of window and track lighting so a few color consistency issues...for the most part I just didn't worry about it.
When in doubt I went with black and white...which I prefer for dance any way.

Mostly shot with the Nikon D3 and the 85 1.4.
This was just a few weeks ago. We had a fairly decent day this time. Katie and I have shot together several times and it is always very productive to shoot her, she is very professional and a beautiful dancer.

The trick to shooting dancers is to allow them get into a flow. This is very easy with Katie as she needs no help working a scene. I just find a setting, put her in it and set her loose to do whatever she feels.

All shot with natural light and the Nikon D3 with the 70-200 lens.
As I am still working on getting more traffic to that site I decided to do some dual posts here.

This is from a shoot I did with Ann in downtown Boise last week, it was crazy cold and raining a bit.
Ann hung in there and we found a few good spots.
This is towards the end of the shoot with the Nikon D3 and the 70-200 and natural light.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475867020661919518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2635138422975444620.post-68488318840003425402013-04-10T10:14:00.001-07:002013-04-10T10:14:42.802-07:00A fellow photographer and I were doing an outdoor portrait dance shoot with Nicole a couple weeks. Nicole is not a professional ballerina but we were out having a fun dance shoot downtown.

So it got dark and we were heading back to our cars and the other photography tells Nicole to get in the fountain.....it was pretty cold and windy so I kind of laughed and said "no you don't need to get in the fountain". The other photographer talked her into it so I figured what the heck.

She we take a few shots and she tells her friend who came along with her to jump in with her...so before we knew it we are shooting a romance novel cover haha.
I just went with the flow and actually really like this shot.
A good example of letting a shoot progess freely, you never know where you will end up if you keep an open mind.

This was after dark with just the light from the fountain with the D3 and I believe this was with the 35 1.8, which is a DX lens but I works amazingly well and is super sharp wide open on my full frame.
This was taken at ISO 6400 and then a bit of noise reduction in Lightroom to arrive at this.
They are a perfect combination of all the things I like to photograph. Beauty, action and drama rolled into one.

Ballerinas make it look so easy, they are natural posers and very confident in their own skin.

The idea is that I find a nice looking setting and then I position the ballerina into the scene and ask her to "show me something" or something along those lines. The idea is for the ballerina to creatively use the setting or "Freestyle". I am often surprised with their creativity. Sometimes the smallest moves are the most effective.
Sometimes they need a little nudge...so I demonstrate a pose...they laugh really hard and then they come up with something better.

I plan to continue this project for some time and to incorporate the most skilled ballerinas who are willing to participate. As of today almost all the photos in the gallery are professional or apprentice level ballerinas working with local professional companies. Boise has a large number of very good dancers and I am finding they are willing to participate.

We do have an national ballet company here in Boise and hope someday to have their ballerinas participate...not yet....that remains a work in progress. Hopefully as the work grows they will want to be included.

So almost all of this work will be with the Nikon D3 and the 70-200 2.8 lens. I find this to be the perfect combination for natural light work. The long focal length and thin depth of field are great allies in creating separation between the dancer and the environment.

Some of you may notice a few flash and even a couple studio shots in the gallery at present. My guess is that most of the shots in the gallery today, March 2013, will not still be there in another 6 months. I plan to cull the gallery as I work with more dancers.

So anyway as of this week I have officially named this project "Freestyle Ballerina".
On the surface it may remind you of the Ballerina Project work being done in New York. Really this is not a copy of that project. Just 6 months ago I became aware of that work. The Ballerina Project is almost wholly photographed on black and white film. I love the look of it but plan in this work in take advantage of the processing options made available with digital.

So without further ado I introduce "Freestyle Ballerina" to the world.
I hope the work is well recieved and enjoyed by many. Please keep checking back as this is a work in progress and many additions are planned. I am including a small sample of the gallery.

Here is the work in process gallery, please have a look: http://alloutdoor.smugmug.com/UrbanBallerinaProject/Freestyle-urban-ballarinas/28490996_L3k6vF#!i=1868944867&k=njbSRSq
I love this shot. I am so glad this is my shot because if it was somebody else's because then I would have to say "Damn I wish I had shot that" haha.

Sometimes the elements all come together, right subject, in the right place, right light, etc etc etc...this is one of those for me.
I actually shot this three years ago but I re process it every once in a while just to get to play with it again.
You artists out there know what I am talking about.
Shots like this are why I keep loading up the gear and hitting it.

This is Katie Ponozzo my favorite boise dancer...really an amazing artist. I need to shoot her more :).
By Mike Reid, Boise outdoor portrait photographer. This is Katrina in light from an sb800 speedlight shot through a softbox. Beautiful model in a very cool setting in a pose you don't see every day. D3 with the 85mm 1.4. this is right before dark on a very chilly day last fall. This is an old town hall built in the late 1800's.

The light adds a lot of character to this shot.

This is Katrina during the same shoot but about 15 minutes earlier, catching the last rays of the sun as it is setting. This is natural light. Nikon D3 and the 85 1.4 used again in this shot.

You can see the benefit of adopting a "best light" strategy. Think of your portraits as a recipe, when you get the mix of components correct...it is all good.
By Mike Reid, Boise outdoor portrait photographer.I like to compare studio portraits to lake fishing out of a boat, and outdoor on location portraits to mountain stream fishing.
Boat fishing is soooo boring, no adventure, same old stuff not very challenging. The terrain never changes.
Stream fishing, you are always moving, seeing new things with endless possibilities. Different terrain every time.

Each portrait session I shoot I try to find a little different locations and shoot those locations and subjects differently than I have before.

I like to think of my self as a best light photographer. I started out shooting portraits several years ago shooting mostly with a basic softbox and speedlight set up. The results were very nice but I found over time that I don't like messing with lights/equipment.
I have come to understand that I would much rather spend my time working my client and the location to find the best settings and using the best available light.

Usually the person I am photographing arrives with a lot of energy and may sometimes be nervous. The last thing they want to do is stand there while I set up lights, adjust, adjust, adjust. That is no fun for anyone.

Now don't get me wrong sometimes lights are required to get the best out of a subject or a setting. Especially when shooting in a mostly green environment like a park....that is speedlight country....unless you like alien green looking skin. I always have my lights with me and will use them for best effect when necessary.

So since I always shoot the last two hours of the day I always have good light "somewhere", I just need to look for it.
Now assuming good light the first thing I do when assembling my portrait is find a nice setting with a non distracting background. Sounds simple enough......
What I have discovered over time is that I am also subconciously looking for backgrounds with a framing effect for my subject. I almost always shoot portraits with the 85 1.4 at 1.8 or 2, or the 70-200 2.8 at 2.8 or 4 and 200mm. I try to get the most blur possible on my backgrounds this helps greatly in making the background non distracting and allows me to use the colors of the background for subject framing.

Now once we have found our background in good light, it is time to place my portrait subject into the frame.
I already have the photo in my head so I know what the background is going to look like so I pick the best spot for the subject.....which I will probably change a couple times before moving to another spot. I like to try 2 or 3 different looks for a background before I move on.

Next is the pose for the subject. Depending on who I am shooting I try to leave the pose/look to the person I am shooting as much as possible, I tell them to do their thing or some version thereof. Some people need help of course, then I help them out to get into the flow of the location.

Then I take the shot, usually from a few different locations, higher lower a bit from the side. I may adjust the subjects pose or angle. Sometimes very small moves can make a big change in the photo.

I usually shoot 6-8 significant scenes per outing with several casual shots taken along the way as we are looking for the next scene.

So essentially....an experienced professional sees the photo possibilities in their head and then builds the portrait from back to front. A beginner or hobbyist shoots the subject and lets the background fall where it may, essentially creating a portrait built from the front to the back.

For me every portrait session is a search for treasure. I am looking for the light, looking for the backgrounds and all the time working with my subject to have them feeling their best and ready to make the most if it when we find those perfect opportunities to make a great image.

Some shoots you know you killed it before you even get back home and see the photos on the computer screen. When all the elements come together....you just know it.
Those are the days that keep me picking up the gear and heading out there, nothing else like it.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475867020661919518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2635138422975444620.post-8546936585323705192013-02-20T09:13:00.004-08:002013-02-26T12:47:33.938-08:00Nell, Boise ballerina. Outdoor dance portraits by Boise outdoor portrait photographer Mike Reid.Nell is a beautiful dancer. She works with one of the Boise dance companies. We did this shoot on a cold winter overcast day in January, it was about 38 degrees.
You could never tell from the photos but the poor girl was freezing. Luckily her car was nearby, so her boyfriend would run and get it warm and then she would go sit until she returned to room temperature then we would shoot again.
My daugher told me to never freeze dancers....probably good advice :).

These are all with natural light and the Nikon d3 with the 85 1.4 lens. Main thing I focused on was to get nice backgrounds and settings in flattering light.
We really did not shoot for more that a few minutes at a time so I was very happy with the number of keepers we did get.

It helped a lot that Nell was a natural poser (as most dancers are) so we didn't have to waste any time in pose coaching, which if you have been following me at all you know I prefer not to do any pose coaching as it slows things down and makes the subject look nervous and unnatural.
By Mike Reid.Boise outdoor portrait shoot with model Hannah, a couple weeks ago at the Old Idaho Penitentiary. This was the second time I have done a shoot in there and there are some really nice sets in there.

These are mostly with the Nikon D3 and the 85 1.4. This is proving to be an excellent combination for natural light photography. All the photos in this set are natural light. Most of these shots are at F2. I always use auto iso so not sure what the iso was but probably ranged from 200 - 800.

Hannah is a fairly experienced model so I did very little posing. I put most of my effort into finding good settings in good light.
She has beautiful hair and amazing blue eyes as you can see in the photos.
I shoot with the D700 and the D3....still.
One of these days I may upgrade to the D3S, but for me that is where progress stopped and even the D3S is not a must have. The upgrade is a tough decision for me because the reality is that I would not gain much over the cameras I currently use.

With the new noise control in Lightroom I can take an amazing amount of noise out of my D3 images taken at high ISO. Any lack of dynamic range can for the most part be made up pretty easily in Lightroom as well.

I just don't need all that resolution in the new generation of cameras and the problems that come with it. More resolution does not add any value for me, and I have no use for video. More megapixels is going in the wrong direction.

With the subjects I mainly shoot, portraits and weddings, 12 megapixels is plenty.

The Nikon dream camera for me would be the D700 body with 16 megapixels, two CF cards, more dynamic range, the high ISO performance of the D3S and no video.

Then there is the nagging feeling there in the background that DSLR's may soon be overtaken by one of the mirrorless formats.....with cameras being much smaller and less expensive.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475867020661919518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2635138422975444620.post-32157535005475162862013-02-13T13:11:00.002-08:002013-02-13T13:36:18.181-08:00Hard to believe I haven't been back on here in a year. Time gets away from us.

I have been very busy shooting and plan to get caught up with posting some photos from the shoots I have been doing.

So if anyone is out there, check back in a day or two for some new content.
Outdoor portraits on the grounds by the Old Penitentiary, Bishops House and the rock garden are so productive for senior pictures. Pretty much any kind of setting a person could want.
We were very lucky this day to have lots of clouds which enabled us to shoot at the rock garden. When the sun is out it is just to bright as there is no shade.

Megan showed up for her senior pictures shoot ready to go. Not very often I shoot a senior with the kind of confidence she had, she showed up relaxed and ready to shoot.
Obviously a very pretty girl, it didn't take long start getting some nice portraits.
It is pretty common for it to take 20 minutes or so of working with my portrait subject to figure out how to get the best looks out of them and indeed what their best look is.

These shots are all natural light with the d700 and the 70-200 at F4.
Nice cloudy day and really busy with painters and other photographers in the ally, that place is getting popular.

Megan started out shy so we messed around chatted and laughed a lot to get her relaxed and having fun. Took about 30 minutes and pretty soon she was modeling like a pro.

These are all natural light with the d3 and the 85 1.4 at F1.8 if I remember correctly.
I have been shooting more natural light as I find I get a much better flow with the person I am shooting with.
Less time messing with lights and gear is always a plus....especially when we get lucky with cloudy days....which are perfect when shooting in an urban setting like Freak Alley.
Great weather this day, a bit too sunny actually. We found a little nook with nice light to shoot in at The Bishop's House. I think we did the entire shoot in a space of about 20 yards.
These are all with the D3 and the 70-200 at 2.8 or 4. All natural light.
I always enjoy shooting Takara, she is so much fun and obviously very pretty which makes it easy on me.
Our collaboration has been so much fun and so many beautiful images have come from it.

Obviously a very athletic and artistic dancer. I don't normally do studio work but this was a fun project.
I used just one light, the same one I use for my outside portraits. SB800 shooting through a 42" umbrella style softbox.
If you look at the shadows you can see the light was placed very high above and to the image left. D700 using commander mode, and the 85 1.4.
Kathryn Albertson Park, Boise. Photos by Mike Reid, All Outdoor Photography. We hit fall color just about at peak, nice cloudy day. These are all natural light outdoor portraits with the Nikon D3 and the older model 85 1.4 lens.

Tashianna's outfits were just right for colors of the locations this day, I really like how this shoot came together. There are a few shots from this day that went right on my all time favorites list. She is a breeze to work with and basically poses herself so I just pick the locations and the light and tell here more or less where to stand and then just shoot. What could be easier?

Check out the gallery, there is a lot of variety and some fun shots. This is one of my favorite galleries as so many elements came together in this one. The setting, the colors, the model .... and of course the light was just right.

For any of you that have been following the blog you already know that this is how I like to shoot when it all comes together. I really like when I don't have to do any posing....I can do it if necessary but it messes with the mojo of the shoot. It makes it much more difficult to really capture a person if you are telling them how to stand......obviously :).

Some of you may recognize Tashianna from the Freak Alley shoot I posted last month.

Here is Tashianna's full gallery: http://alloutdoor.smugmug.com/Portrait-galleries/Tashianna-Fall/20065698_fTfvW2#1582279443_mwhnbRM
By Mike Reid, All Outdoor Photography. The day was really cold and cloudy. Cayla was a trooper and ready to go. Clouds gave us really nice natural light so we didn't use the flash much. Most of these are with the D3 and the 85 1.4.

The fall color was still pretty strong but definitely on the downhill side. The shoot was a lot of fun, Cayla had her Mom and her boyfriend there, so plenty of conversation and clowning around.

These are Cayla's senior portraits and she was excited for the shoot and I really like how they came out.
Cayla is a cheerleader so right at the end of the shoot we took some nice shots with some of her cheer equipment with the d700 70-200 and my usual light setup.
When a girl can let it go and be silly and fun and knows how to pose...portrait photography becomes so easy. Just find good spots put her in the frame and shoot away....enter Sammi.
I said "you can do whatever you want", she perked up and said "really" and that was all it took.

The park was SO crowded with "photographers." We had to kind of take the unbeaten path so a few different looks....I know I have never shot anyone else up in that tree for instance....and of course the deer walking behind her across the path as we were shooting...well I would like to say I planned that but.

Her gallery is a real mix of flash and natural light. I had all the equipment out for this one. I wasn't able to hit all the normal spots because of the crowds of people and a lot of the less ideal spots are back in the tree cover, so lights helped out a lot. Then we ran late so a few very flashed shots at the end of the shoot were fun.

D3 with the 85 1.4 and the D700 with the 70-200 2.8. Had the light stand with sb800 along with the shoot through umbrella softbox along for the flash work.

So have a look at the entire gallery if you have a minute...some really unique shots in this one:
Photos by Mike Reid, All Outdoor Photography.I was a little resistant to shooting outdoor portraits downtown when fall color was at it's peak in the local parks....but you know what....I could have shot Katy anywhere and it would have worked. She is an obviously very pretty girl with a great combination of red hair and blue eyes.

Katy showed up for the shoot excited and shy. We chatted a bit on our walk over to Freak Alley and she started to relax. We kind of eased into the photography and after about 15 minutes she gained her confidence and became a posing master.
After that I just had to put her in position and start clicking as she did her thing.
I love it when it is that easy, then I can concentrate on finding good spots in the good light.

These are all shot with natural light...seems I am doing more and more natural light shoots. I really like to shoot that way except when I am in a predominately green park area.
It was very sunny when we started so I changed my plan which had been to start shooting at City Hall and did the shoot backwards and started in the alley, so we were in good light the entire shoot.

Shot with the D3 and the 85 1.4 and the D700 with the 70-200. All in downtown Boise. We started at Freak Alley and ended up down by City Hall.
When she moved at the end of last year, that was pretty much the end of it. We have not booked any new clients since then and do not plan to book any more.

This frees me up to do a lot more portraits and landscapes.

We were so lucky to have Palina and Steve for our last one. Beautiful couple, really so sweet and a lot of fun.
Wood River Cellars was the venue and it looks amazing in the fall. It was a beautiful fall day, about 70.

It was a typical wedding, everybody was late...which we pretty much plan for so everything went smooth on the day.

Lots of great photos.
If you want to see what a full wedding gallery looks like when done by All Outdoor Photography take a look at the link. Last one so now or never :)

Shot with the D3 and 24-70 with sb800 on a bracket. D700 with 70-200 2.8 and the D300 with 24-70 2.8 Tamron.

If you have a minute go check out the gallery:

Those of you that have been shooting outdoor portraits for any length of time and have perfected your craft know that the technical skills required tend to become second nature.
Technical knowledge of how the camera works, iso, shutter speed, f-stops, are chosen/adjusted almost without even thinking about it.
Don't get caught up in the equipment, a good portrait can be achieved with pretty much any camera and lens if you know what you are doing.
Don't get caught up in "the rules", if it looks good shoot it.

Light, backgrounds, composition, pose, personality, these are the components of a good portait.
Shoot during the right time of day to afford yourself the best light for the settings you have chosen.
Select the background first. The background is an accessory and should not compete with your subject for attention.
See the entire frame and place your subject into the frame in the most eye pleasing way.
Interact with your subject to put them in a position to look natural and complimentary.
The hardest part is to get some personality into the photo, this is where the 20 minutes you spent chatting with them and getting to know them at the start of the shoot comes into play.
Most would be outdoor portrait photographers will never put in the time and practice required to reach a level of competency and confidence which allows the technical aspects of the photography to get out of their way like they do for an experienced photographer.

A photographer whose attention is consumed with the technical and artistic requirements during the shoot is not free to concentrate on what is really the most important aspect of good portraiture, the psychology of the photographer subject relationship and the interaction with the subject during the actual shoot.

It is much more difficult for a portrait subject to relax and feel confident in an environment where the photographer is spending the majority of their time messing, wrestling with their equipment.
If the photographers subject never reaches a point where they can relax, feel comfortable and trusting, then their true self will never be revealed to the camera.
This then is what separates great portraits from nicely exposed snapshots.

Now some photographers are naturals at putting their subject at ease quickly, some not so much.

This is where natural light photographers have a bit of an advantage. Spending to much time moving setting up adjusting and fidgeting with lights is really death on the relationship the photographer needs to form with the client.
Then the shoot has the potential to turn into one of those robotic, ok turn your chin to the left, put your hand on your shoulder, ok chin up 1 inch, smile, click.
Overdirecting, overposing, of the subject is a recipe for failure.
Find your background, place the subject where you want them in the frame, provide minor input and let them go. Many subjects will require some coaching, but keep it light and fun.

If your subject is relaxed, having fun and feeling attractive, that is when the magic happens :).

Anyway that is pretty much how I see it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12475867020661919518noreply@blogger.com0
